There are all kinds of statistics bouncing around out there, but generally speaking, most self-published authors will likely sell around 250 books or less. A few years ago, the industry was buzzing when statistics revealed that the average self-published author earns less than $500 from her books.
So, for example, an author can have two or more author names with an author rank of 20,000 or better, and may still be selling 1,000 books per month. At a modest $2 royalty, which many indie authors make, you only need to sell 500 books to make $1,000 per month, which is $10,000 per year if you can do it consistently.
Self-published authors can make between 40% – 60% royalties on a single book sale while traditionally published authors usually make between 10%-12% royalties. First-time authors who want to traditionally publish can get an advance, which is usually $10,000 (usually not that much more for a first-timer).
The average traditionally published non-fiction book sells about 250-300 copies in the first year, but when we manage a book launch, our target is to sell 1,000 copies in the first 3 months.
Today, it is just 1%. The better options available to authors are making a difference. The turning point came between 2011 and 2012 when Amazon “absolutely crushed their competitors” says self-publishing service Author Imprints. A report by Statista says over 675 million print books were sold in 2018 in the US alone.
Do books still sell?
“The average U.S. nonfiction book is now selling less than 250 copies per year and less than 3,000 copies over its lifetime,” says publisher Steve Piersanti, “And very few titles are big sellers.” Of course not, because you can make a living writing books–even if you don’t sell a single copy.
This figure can vary from $15,080 to $127,816 per year, depending on experience, the writing subject matter, contract terms and book sales. Regarding book sales, as with many business owners, a novelist’s salary can fluctuate depending on the amount of product sold.
As we can see from many authors and agents the average first time author is projected to earn around $10,000 for their new book. After you pay your agent and invest in promotion, there isn’t much left over.
What is the most successful self-published book?
The most successful self-published book to date is E.L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey. What started as fan-fiction for Twilight became its own thing, selling over 100 million copies worldwide and holding the record for “fastest-selling paperback.” It stayed on the New York Times Bestseller list for 133 consecutive weeks.
Is Self Publishing worth it?
Whether or not self-publishing or getting a publisher is better relies entirely upon your own goals and resources. If you want to have far more creative control but pay a little more upfront (with the knowledge you also make a lot more in royalties), self-publishing is the best route.
How much does JK Rowling make per book?
J.K. Rowling’s pay for each Harry Potter book sold is not a matter of public record. However, if she receives the industry standard 15% per book, she might have made approximately $1.15 billion, based on the series total revenue of about $7.7 billion. Each new paperback sold at $7 would be mean about $1 for Rowling.

Is Kindle publishing still profitable in 2020?
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is still profitable for publishers that understand the market. In fact, it will always be profitable for publishers that understand the market. The reason is because Amazon made Kindle an open platform for anyone to enter if they wish.
What is considered a good number of books sold?
So what is a good sales figure for any book? “A sensational sale would be about 25,000 copies,” says literary agent Jane Dystel. “Even 15,000 would be a strong enough sale to get the publisher’s attention for the author for a second book.”
How many books do you need to sell to be a bestseller?
The general consensus is that if you want to make your way onto a best-seller list, any best-seller list, you have to sell at least 5,000 books in a week, or maybe 10,000. Beyond that, things get complicated depending on which list you’re looking to end up on.
