Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’s annual letter to shareholders is always a must-read and this year he discusses, among other things, the role of a handstand coach, the fact that Amazon Prime now has more than 100 million members and also reveals (almost in passing) that more than 1,000 independent authors earned over $100,000
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) enables indie authors to publish and sell ebooks and paperbacks directly to millions of Amazon customers. Authors generally earn royalties equal to 35% or 70% of the ebook’s list price minus the distribution cost (which is determined by the ebook’s file size).

Average book authors don’t make a lot of money. A typical book author barely makes more than minimum wage. You receive an advance and 10% royalties on net profit from each book. If your book retails at $25 per copy, you would need to sell at least 4,000 copies to break even on a $5,000 advance.

The most successful self-published book to date is E.L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey. You don’t pay for book printing – you simply collect a commission whenever it sells. You’re in charge of the price and associated commission as well. When you upload your book, Amazon tells you what their costs are — $2.50 for example, for a 150-page book.
Amazon pays royalties only on eBooks, print books, and audiobooks that are sold and NOT refunded by customers. For eBook royalties, Amazon pays the author or publisher 60 days after the end of each month’s sales.
