An indie author is a writer who publishes their work without the help of an established press. Often called self-publishing authors, they are responsible for editing, producing, distributing, and marketing the books they write. They are authors who have deals with small- and medium-sized traditional publishers.
Indie authors: You will often hear authors calling themselves indie authors. In this instance they usually mean self-published. We do consider self-published books for the book box but the majority are traditionally published with editorial direction and so on by independent publishers.
Self-published authors can make between 40% – 60% royalties on a single book sale while traditionally published authors usually make between 10%-12% royalties. First-time authors who want to traditionally publish can get an advance, which is usually $10,000 (usually not that much more for a first-timer).
According to Author Earnings, less than 45% of those author-earnings are going to traditionally published authors – the rest go to indie and small presses. BUT, keep in mind, indie authors are earning 70% of the profit, while traditionally published authors are making more like 10%.
As we can see from many authors and agents the average first time author is projected to earn around $10,000 for their new book. After you pay your agent and invest in promotion, there isn’t much left over.
